Reaction:

According to Heffernan (2011), 65% of children in school today will be working in jobs that do not yet exists. I chose this quote because I feel there are many school based activities that do not adequately prepare students for their future. For example, in elementary school, 30% of the school day is spent on spelling. While I believe that spelling is important I don't think memorizing spelling words outside of their context of use is the best way to learn to spell. Instead, I think students should be communicating with real audiences for authentic purposes and using spell check and asking others to proof read their writing. This what real authors do.

In the article Cathy Davidson was mentioned as someone who is challenging how schools are preparing student for life in the real world. Dr. Davidson suggest schools should stop focusing on teaching facts but start teaching students how to think and problem solve. I think she is right on target!

Novel:Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

"A long time ago, when all the grandfathers and grandmothers of today were little boys and little girls or very small babies, or perhaps not even born, Pa and Ma and Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin."

I've read these books 100 time! I've visited several of the places where Ingalls family actually lived! Pepin Wisconsin, Walnut Grove in Minnesota, and De Smet South Dakota! I love these books because they remind of simpler times and spending time with family.
